KIMILILI TOWN

It is a town and area in Kenya’s Bungoma county. A home of the Former Political leader the Late Michael Kijana Wamalwa(8th Vice President of Kenya) and the famous Bukusu Activist Elijah Masinda Wa Nameme.

it is occupied by Bukusu and a few Teso Community. Due to it welcoming residents currently it is a home to many Kenyan Tribes.

History

It is believed that a long time ago Kimilili Was Bushy with no occupants.
Bukusu community Migrated fromUganda via Mt Elgon and Settled in Kimilili.
To acquire this land families had to Slash and clear the land.
It was first occupied by five families Marutis,Wasike,Mwangales,Manyololi and Amtala then later their children sold the land to others.
Some of Bukusu People who had been left in the slopes of MT. Elgon were later chased away by their neighbours,Sabaot, which made them to buy land and settle in Kimilili town.

Economy

• It has several economic activities:-retail grocery stores,Supermarket, Private schools,Computer colleges,Restaurants.etc
• It has a market that is ranked among the best markets in Bungoma county, mostly runned on Thursdays.
• It has non governmental organizations e.g ICFEM and Omwabini.
• Most residents are cash crop farmers planting coffee,maize,Beans,bananas, Sunflower seed and sugarcane.
• Some residents are livestock keepers i.e  Cows,goats,Sheep and Chicken.

Sports

• It has a stadium known as Amutala Stadium,where most of the sports events take place.
• It has a football club known as Kimilili All Stars that currently play in Kenya league 2.

Culture

Most of the occupants are the Bukusu Community thus most of the people follow the Bukusu Culture.
The famous culture that is practised is during the circumcision  ceremony where young men are circumcised.
Most Liked Brew is Busaa made from fermented Maize flour

It has a Technical College,Matili Technical Training Institute which recently had it’s first graduation Ceremony cheered by D.President Hon.William Ruto

Notable People

It has Bukusu community who Believe that long time ago kimilili was bushy and it had no occupants in it. Four men Mwangale,Maruti,Manyololi and Amutala were the first occupants of this place.
To acquire the land they had to slash and made the land their homes.
The famous land disputes with the neighboring community,the Sabout,led to many of Bukusu around mount Elgon to flew to Kimilili.
